Irish Railways in Colour is a compilation of colour photographs of the railways of Ireland in the period 1955 -1967, when colour photography would not have been in
common usage.
The book starts with a concise overview of the railway network in Ireland, which was in decline mode in the period under review. A map of the railways of Ireland in
1957 shows the extensive network still remaining at that stage. An interesting convention used is to deliniate the lines on the map as "Narrow Gauge" and "Standard
Broad Gauge".
The book is divided into 4 main chapters covering the Ulster Transport Authority, the GNR(I), CIE and other lines. The selection of photos gives creedence to a
comment made by a friend of mine who bemoaned the lack of photographs of a long demolished mine engine house at Silvermines in Co. Tipperary with the
following observation: "the only people with decent photographic equipment back then were the railway enthusiasts and they were too busy trainspotting".
Some photos with IH interest in the background include shots at:
* Whiteabbey
* Adelaide
* Barn
* Dromin Junction
* Dungannon
* Mixed gauge track in Derry
* Ballyhaise
* Belturbet
* North Wall, Dublin (with the erstwhile gasometer on Sir John Rogerson's Quay)
* Ballinamore
* Guinness Locomotive on a very narrow Saint John's Road in Dublin.
